Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD

What is Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)?

CPT is one of the two gold-standard treatments for PTSD. It is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It helps individuals process traumatic events and challenge the unhelpful beliefs that may arise from these experiences. CPT is designed to reduce the symptoms of PTSD and promote emotional healing.

How CPT Works

CPT focuses on helping individuals understand and change the way they think about their trauma. The therapy is typically structured over 12 sessions and includes the following components:

  1. Psychoeducation: Learning about PTSD and how it affects the brain, emotions, and behaviors.

  2. Impact Statement: Writing about how the traumatic event has affected your beliefs and worldview, particularly related to safety, trust, power, control, esteem, and intimacy.

  3. Cognitive Restructuring: Identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts and beliefs related to the trauma, such as “I am to blame” or “The world is unsafe.”

  4. Trauma Processing: Processing the traumatic event in a safe, controlled environment and learning to reframe its meaning in your life.  In some cases, trauma processing is not necessary.

  5. Homework Assignments: Applying skills learned in therapy to daily life, such as practicing new ways of thinking and completing thought-challenging exercises.

Who Can Benefit from CPT?

CPT is effective for individuals with PTSD, including those who have experienced combat trauma, sexual assault, or other forms of trauma. It is especially helpful for those who struggle with negative beliefs about themselves or the world following trauma.
