Motivational Interviewing (MI)

What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)?

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, client-centered approach designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation to make positive changes in their life toward their stated goals. MI helps resolve ambivalence about change by focusing on the client’s values and goals and guiding them toward self-directed behavior change.

How MI Works

MI is based on principles of collaboration and empowerment. It involves:

  1. Expressing Empathy: Creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel understood.

  2. Developing Discrepancy: Helping clients recognize the gap between their current behavior and their desired goals or values.

  3. Rolling with Resistance (Managing Discord): Avoiding confrontation and encouraging the client to explore their own reasons for change.

  4. Supporting Self-Efficacy: Building the client’s confidence in their ability to make changes.

Who Can Benefit from MI?

MI is particularly effective for individuals struggling with substance use, eating disorders, or any behavior change where ambivalence is a barrier. It is also useful for those facing major life transitions or decisions where motivation is needed to initiate positive change.
