Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)
What is Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)?
CBIT is an evidence-based therapy designed to reduce the frequency and severity of tics in individuals with tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome. It focuses on identifying triggers and using behavioral strategies to manage and control tics without the need for medication.
How CBIT Works
CBIT consists of several key components:
Habit Reversal Training (HRT): This technique helps individuals recognize the urge to tic and implement competing responses that are physically incompatible with the tic. For example, if the tic involves shoulder shrugging, the competing response might be relaxing the shoulders.
Awareness Training: Clients learn to become more aware of the sensations or urges that precede tics, which allows them to intervene earlier.
Relaxation Training: Reducing stress and anxiety is important since these factors can exacerbate tics. CBIT incorporates relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation.
Functional Interventions: Identifying situations or environments that may trigger tics and developing strategies to manage or modify these situations.
Who Can Benefit from CBIT?
CBIT is effective for children and adults with tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome. It is particularly useful for those who want to reduce tics without relying on medication. Research has shown that CBIT can lead to significant improvements in tic severity and quality of life.
CBIT at the Mindfulness & Change Group
Our therapists are trained in CBIT and work with individuals to develop personalized plans that address the unique characteristics of their tics. We focus on helping clients gain greater control over their tics and reduce the impact tics have on their daily lives.
