DBT for Children (DBT-C)

What is DBT-C?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C) is a modified version of traditional DBT tailored for children who experience severe emotional dysregulation and behavior issues. DBT-C involves both the child and their caregivers, focusing on teaching emotion regulation skills, effective communication, and problem-solving.

How DBT-C Works

DBT-C focuses on helping children manage their intense emotions while also improving family dynamics. The therapy is structured to:

Teach children skills in mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Provide parents or caregivers with tools to respond to their child’s emotions and behaviors effectively, creating a more supportive environment at home.

Who Can Benefit from DBT-C?

DBT-C is designed for children aged 6 to 12 (though many of it’s strategies are helpful for children and people of all ages) who struggle with severe mood swings, anger, impulsivity, or other behavioral challenges. It is especially useful for children with emotional disorders, ADHD, or anxiety.
